Frankfurt Airport

For the past year, I’ve been using London Heathrow as my primary hub for traveling in Europe, but following the recent events that took place there, I have decided to use Frankfurt Airport instead. It offers direct flights to San Francisco operated by Lufthansa (a Star Alliance partner), it is a lot smaller than London Heathrow, and all terminals are directly connected to each other. Also, the excellent and reasonably-priced Sheraton Frankfurt Hotel & Towers is located within the airport itself, making it a lot easier to catch the 9:35AM flight back home. Good bye Heathrow! Guten Tag Frankfurt!

Hey! I just did the same thing this past week. Switched from Heathrow to Frankfurt. However, I had to downgrade my flight status as Lufthansa into Frankfurt isn’t nearly as nice as BA into Heathrow. But I hear the Airbus Lufthansa flights through Munich are the best. Flying to the US from Frankfurt, you go through no less than 5 different security lines. It’s just not worth it…

[...] If you find yourself waiting in Frankfurt Airport for your flight back home, you might want to get a ride on one of the life-size flight simulators operated by ProFlight on behalf of Lufthansa. A three-hour session on either Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 simulator costs $363 (source: BusinessWeek), which is less than renting a Cessna 172 Skyhawk NAV III for the same period of time. Well, I know what I’m going to do next time I’m there… [...]

Mark,

I agree, the security lines in Frankfurt are terrible. And if you got your ticket through United, you cannot use electronic upgrades, for Lufthansa’s and United’s IT systems are not integrated yet. Instead, you need to carry a paper upgrade voucher, which I never do.
